The difference between Management and Leadership

It is possible to manage only 3 things:

  • Time
  • Money
  • Quality

And there is a trade off that you need to reach: if you focus your energy on time, it will cost more and will be of less quality. The results is the same focusing on money (in the sense of expenses), the quality will be lower and you will need more time to accomplish the result. If quality drives your action you will need more time and money to reach your objectives.

Focusing on more than one dimension will enhance the logic: if your objective is to obtain a top quality product in a short period of time, you will need to invest a lot of money in it.

Whatever your objective, the fact is that you can manage only what you can control.

Leadership, on the other side, concerns people, the part of the organization missing. But leadership is completely the opposite of management, because it requires to leave control, power and responsibilities to your followers.

No one can decide on his own to became a leader, but if enough people are willing to give him their respect becoming followers, a new leader can born.

A true leader is the one who give control to people because understand that it is much simpler let them think on their own than treat them as monkeys. A true leader will not claim himself responsible for the success of the work done, because it will be a team work and all the team is responsible for the results.

The ones who claim to be able to manage people are liars. The ones who are not able to meet a deadline in terms of quality, time and money because of the people are not a good manager.
